How Much Does That Lumber Package Weigh?
It usually comes up at the worst moment. The yard asks if your truck can take the whole package, the crane operator wants a pick weight, or the engineer asks how many bundles can sit on the second-floor deck before the walls go up. Nobody has the number, so somebody guesses.
This lumber weight calculator gives you the real figure. Choose the species, pick a standard size like a 2×4 or 2×10 (actual dimensions fill in for you), set the length and count, and you get the weight per piece and for the full load. There is a board feet option and a sheet goods calculator for plywood, OSB and MDF as well.
Lumber Weight Calculators
Lumber by Size
Studs, joists, rafters, posts, decking and boards. Pick a nominal size or enter your own.
Lumber by Board Feet
Hardwood orders, mixed-width loads, and lumber lists already totaled in board feet.
Plywood, OSB & MDF Sheets
Sheathing, subfloor, and cabinet panels by the sheet or by the unit.
Densities are average dry weights at roughly 12% moisture content. Real boards vary with growth rate, grade and moisture, so treat results as a planning estimate. Panel densities are typical values; check the manufacturer’s data sheet for exact sheet weights.
These calculators give quantity and weight estimates for planning only. They are not a quote, a bid, or an engineered design.
Prices for lumber, plywood and OSB are not the same in every state. Material costs, delivery and short-load fees, sales tax, and labor rates change from state to state, city to city, and even between suppliers in the same town, and they move with the market. Local codes, mix designs, and product sizes can also differ by region.
Always confirm quantities, specifications, and current pricing with your local supplier, engineer, or building department before you order. For project-specific numbers priced to your city and county, request an estimate from our team.
How to Use the Lumber Weight Calculator
- Choose the species. Framing in most of the country is Douglas Fir, Southern Yellow Pine, Hem-Fir or SPF. Check the grade stamp if you are not sure.
- Pick the nominal size. A 2×4 is really 1-1/2 x 3-1/2 inches, and the calculator fills in those actual dimensions for you. Choose Custom for rough-sawn or resawn stock.
- Enter length and piece count. Lengths are usually in feet, but every field has its own unit menu.
- Set the moisture. Kiln-dried is the default. Green or freshly pressure-treated lumber holds a lot of water, so it weighs noticeably more.
A Real Example: A Framing Package for a Garage
Say you are framing a detached garage outside Dallas and the yard is sending 150 Southern Yellow Pine 2x4x8 studs. Each stud is 1.5 x 3.5 x 96 inches, or 0.29 cubic feet. At about 38 lb per cubic foot, that is roughly 11 lb a stud and around 1,670 lb for the bundle.
That one bundle already pushes past the payload of a lot of half-ton pickups. Add the headers, plates and a stack of 7/16 OSB and you are looking at a delivery, not a pickup run.
Why Lumber Weight Matters on a Job
- Hauling: Trucks and trailers have payload limits, and overloading one is a safety and liability problem.
- Crane and forklift picks: Operators need a pick weight, and a full unit of lumber is heavier than it looks.
- Staging on decks: Loading bundles onto a framed floor concentrates weight. Spread them out or ask the engineer before you stack.
- Shipping and freight: Freight is priced by weight, so knowing the load up front helps you compare quotes.
Kiln-Dried, Air-Dried, and Green Lumber
Wood weight swings with moisture more than anything else. Kiln-dried framing lumber leaves the mill at around 15 to 19% moisture, and furniture-grade hardwood is dried lower. Green lumber straight from the saw can be more than half water by weight.
Pressure-treated lumber is the one that surprises people. It is soaked in a water-based preservative, so a fresh PT 2×10 can weigh far more than the same kiln-dried board until it dries out. Use the Green setting for fresh PT and the Kiln-dried setting for KDAT (kiln-dried after treatment).
How the Weight Is Calculated
- Volume of one piece: thickness x width x length in inches / 1,728 = cubic feet
- Board feet: thickness x width x length in inches / 144
- Weight: cubic feet x species density (lb per cubic foot) x moisture factor x number of pieces
- Sheets: sheet area in sq ft x thickness in inches / 12 x panel density x number of sheets
When You Need More Than a Weight
A calculator tells you what a load weighs. It does not tell you how many studs, joists, rafters and sheets the drawings actually call for. That is a lumber takeoff, and it is one of the things our estimators do every day.
Our framing estimating services give you counts by size and length, sheathing by the sheet, and hardware, all prepared and checked by human estimators. For concrete work, try our concrete calculator.
Lumber Weight Questions
Quick answers to what builders and DIYers ask most about lumber weight.
How much does a 2x4x8 weigh?
A kiln-dried 2x4x8 weighs about 8 to 11 lb depending on species. SPF comes in around 8 lb, Douglas Fir around 9.5 lb, and Southern Yellow Pine around 11 lb.
How much does a 2x6x16 weigh?
A kiln-dried Douglas Fir 2x6x16 is about 0.92 cubic feet and weighs roughly 30 lb. Southern Yellow Pine is closer to 35 lb.
How much does a sheet of 3/4 plywood weigh?
A 4 x 8 sheet of 3/4 in softwood plywood weighs roughly 60 to 70 lb. A 7/16 in OSB sheet is closer to 45 to 50 lb.
Is pressure-treated lumber heavier?
Yes, while it is still wet from treatment. Fresh pressure-treated lumber can weigh much more than kiln-dried lumber of the same size. Once it dries, the weight drops back close to untreated wood.
Can you do a full lumber takeoff from my plans?
Yes. Our estimators take off framing lumber, sheathing and hardware from your drawings by hand and usually deliver within 24 to 48 hours.
