Canadian Construction Estimating and CAD Services
Design Estimation are construction takeoffs, MEP estimates, CAD drawings, shop drawings, BIM models and Primavera P6 scheduling services for general contractors and subcontractors of Canadian construction projects. We use the same drawing sets and specifications as Canadian bid crews with an estimated return time of 24-48 hours.
An overview of how projects in Canada are estimated.
There are some real differences between work done in Canada and in the USA, and before beginning a takeoff, our estimators think about each of these differences. Most provinces create their codes based on the National Building Code of Canada and then use a provincial code (e.g. the Ontario Building Code or the BC Building Code). Because the code references on a drawing set define the scope, they are confirmed at the beginning of each job.
Most commercial drawing sets will have metric dimensions. A number of residential and renovation drawings will have both metric and imperial measurements included. The units of the drawings are used to measure then quantities are converted to match your bid form. CSA standards may be referenced to instead of ASTM or ANSI standards for specific requirements. Those citations get read in as part of the takeoff, letting product selection seamlessly transition to pricing.
We Support Canadian Scopes.
We work on multi-unit residential, commercial tenant improvements, institutional renovations and light industrial projects. Each scope package is specific to the type of trades covered such as concrete and masonry, structural steel, MEP systems, drywall and framing, roofing, or finishes. Our MEP estimating team provides estimates for mechanical, electrical and plumbing separately which helps subcontractors understand where they fit in.
An estimated cost is not enough for a general contractor. They require a scope which holds up to the drawings. Our constructability review service can discover gaps between trade packages prior to the bid day and our project scheduling team creates Primavera P6 schedules with the same scope.
The organization of the drawings and the models is complete. The preparation of drawings and models for Canadian projects is done.
CAD drawing staff prepares As Built drawings, Shop drawings and Permit drawings. The requirements for permits differ from city to city; please check with the city or town with jurisdiction over the area before applying for a permit. Our BIM team produces coordinated models for projects that require a clash check or quantity extraction from the model.
Contractors Use Design Estimation For Many Reasons.
We have prepared estimates on projects throughout the United States, Canada and Australia. That range has provided us with experience with various code frameworks, various unit systems and various types of bids, and it maintains uniformity of takeoffs in markets. See our USA projects and Australian projects to see how we organize projects in other parts of the world.
Our estimators go through a documented process. They validate and record all drawing changes, and mark up any question marks against the team before they start pricing the drawing. A takeoff is provided with clear quantities, notes on exclusions and a list of open questions, giving you the freedom to determine the location for contingency.

Frequently Asked Questions
Know Building Codes in Canada?
Yes. Our estimators review the relevant code for each project – whether it’s the National Building Code of Canada or a provincial code. They record items driven by code such as fire separations, insulation values and accessibility, so that your team can understand how code impacts quantity.
Are you able to interpret metric drawings?
Yes. Subtract parts from metric drawings and give output in metric, imperial or a combination. Please indicate the units needed in your bid form when you send in the package.
How fast can you give a Canadian take-off?
The majority of take-off returns are within 24-48 hours. Full MEP scopes or quantities based on BIM can take longer, depending on the size of the package. Before we start work we confirm the timeline.
Are you able to quote in Canadian dollars?
Provide a Canadian dollar price if need be for your bid. Send the drawings with your preferred currency, so we can get an accurate estimate right away.
Which files do you need to begin with?
Submit the drawing set and project specifications as a PDF or CAD, any addenda, and your bid form or scope sheet. Any list of alternates and/or allowances assist in pricing the job accurately.
Prepare permit drawings for Canadian municipalities?
We have a CAD team for permit drawings and submittal packages. The requirements for submission vary from municipality to municipality; please check with the local building department to ensure that the format and content are correct. We develop the package according to your needs.
What are the controls of project information?
Project files are shared with the estimator/drafter assigned to your project and with the project drafter. If you’re sending any sensitive drawings, please discuss our confidentiality terms with us first. You can find out how we process client information in our terms and conditions and privacy policy.
